Leon Rubenstein
Leon Rubenstein was born in 1924 in Fort Worth, TX, and moved to Dallas as a young child. Leon attended college at SMU during World War II, and then joined the Navy as part of the unit that invaded the Marshall Islands after only six weeks of boot camp training. Leon married at 26, after teaching himself to play music and forming a band in his early twenties. He and his wife, Muriel, had three children together in Dallas. After several years of working two jobs to provide for his family, he opened up his own store near Preston Hollow before leaving retail to sell industrial chemicals. Later he became involved with and soon became the Chairman for the Homeless Veterans’ Thanksgiving Dinner, volunteering a large amount of his time to raise money for the Veterans’ Hospital.

Lynn Fine, originally from Johannesburg, is descended from Lithuanian emigres to South Africa. Soon after Lynn and her husband, Stanley, married, they left South Africa, intrigued by the American Dream. They first moved to Los Angeles, then later to Dallas, where they have been for over 20 years. Lynn received her Bachelor’s Degree in Legal Theory and Psychology and worked for a public relations company in South Africa. When she first came to Dallas, she bought an African art company and sold African art and was very in touch with the European fashion market. She has been the Creative Director of KidKraft, the company for which she works.
Dr. Alan Menter and his wife, Pam, were one of the earliest Jewish families from South Africa to arrive in Dallas, thanks to a fellowship opportunity at UT Southwestern Medical Center in 1973. Since their arrival, the Menter family has been actively involved in Jewish communal life, including Temple Shalom and AJC. Dr. Menter, born in England in 1941 and a former member of the South African National Rugby team, is a renowned dermatologist and authority on psoriasis as a serious immune-mediated disease.
Cheryl Sulski was born in Namibia and moved to Cape Town, South Africa, with her family at age eight. She eventually moved with her husband and two children to Dallas, where she has been an important and active member within the Jewish community.
Debra Polsky, Executive Director of the Dallas Jewish Historical Society, was born in New York in 1954 and moved with her family to Chattanooga, Tennessee, at the age of two. Debra moved to Dallas in 1989 for a job with B’nai Brith Youth Organization. Since then, she has profoundly influenced Jewish life in Dallas through her work with many different organizations.
