Rolene grew up with her three sisters in a little gold mining town called Welkom in South Africa. Her father was a pharmacist and then later shut down his pharmacy to own a clothing store. She went to a Catholic school in Welkom and later attended Johannesburg College of Education to become a school teacher. She started dating her husband in 1979 and married him a year and a half later. Because of the crime and political unrest in the country, Rolene and her husband decided to move to US in October 1986. They lived in Lexington, Kentucky and moved to North Dallas, few years later. Rolene met a lot of people from The South African Jewish community and also became a member of JCC
