Mickey Warsaw

Mickey Warsaw was born in 1934 in Chicago, IL. Mickey was married in 1953, eventually moving with her husband to Dallas in order to pursue work. After her husband passed away, she joined the Jewish Community Center in Dallas in order to find a “Jewish home,” as she states, enjoying the welcoming environment of Jewish culture and activities. As a dedicated member of the Jewish community, Mickey has worked for Jewish Family Service and has been involved with the Jewish War Veterans organization, which supports the Veterans’ Hospital as well as several other children’s organizations. Mickey is known as the “Bear Lady” due to her involvement with the delivery of stuffed animals to children in the children’s hospitals.

Maxine Waldman

Maxine Waldman was born in Chicago, IL, in 1922 and moved to Houston with her family when she was five years old. Then, at the age of 12, the family moved to Dallas. Maxine started her college education at the University of Oklahoma and finished her degree at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. Maxine and her husband, Erwin, got married at the old Shearith Israel when they were still in college at SMU. After years of working in various industries, Erwin and his brothers created Waldman Bros, an insurance agency. As a member of the Dallas Jewish community, Maxine has spent many dedicated years working with Shearith Israel, the National Council of Jewish Women, Jewish Family Service, the Jewish Community Center, and as a BBYO Advisor.

Peter Vogel

Peter Vogel was born in 1947 in Yonkers, New York. His family moved to Dallas in 1948 after World War II when he was just ten months old. His father was a quartermaster in World War II and ultimately served in Europe. Peter’s maternal grandparents were from Latvia and immigrated around 1911 to New York, while his father’s family was from Austria and also ended up in the United States. Peter’s father was president of the JCC from 1962-1964, and in 1984 his mother, Thelma, co-founded the Dallas Jewish Coalition for the Homeless, which created a shelter for children of homeless families. Both Peter and his wife are very active supporters of the shelter, called Vogel Alcove. Peter is a renowned lawyer who has served the greater Dallas legal community and has been an adjunct professor at SMU law school for over 28 years.

Max Tonkon

Max Tonkon was born in 1927 in Houston, TX, but moved with his family to Dallas when he was a few months old. Max had his bar mitzvah in 1940, after having learned closely with Rabbi Dr. David Lefkowitz, of Temple Emanu-El. Max heroically served in the army. Later on, he served as Chairman of the Temple Emanu-El Cemetery Committee for 23 years. A proud father and grandfather, Max and his wife, Marilyn, happily live together in Dallas.

Marilyn Tonkon

Marilyn Tonkon was born in 1931 in Dallas, TX. Her father moved from Chicago to Dallas with his mother, who opened a delicatessen on Commerce Street called Chicago Deli. Marilyn worked at Neiman Marcus while her husband, at the time her fiancé, was stationed in Korea. Marilyn attributes her development of self to her having had the time to build up her business. As a dedicated member of the Jewish community and a loving mother, Marilyn has given a lot to Dallas’s Jewish community.
